Clients are always asking us what things they should focus on to rank well in search engines. Here’s a checklist of the key things you need on each page of your website:
Each page on your site should have a unique title containing the key words you want to rank for. It’s a good idea to include your company name in the title too. Keep titles to 55 characters or less including spaces. That’s about 8-9 words. The title tag shows up in blue in search results:
Descriptions are the black text on search result pages below the website link. They aren’t as important for SEO purposes but are extremely important in getting users to click through to your site. Descriptions should be 150 to 160 characters in length and give the reader a reason to visit your website.
Also known as H1 and H2 tags these are the headings on your web pages. They should include the keywords you want to rank for in search engines.
Image ALT tags and filenames
An alt tag is the name of an image. Search engines can’t see images but can read your description of them. All images should be named with keywords if possible and the filename for the image should also contain your keywords.
The content of your website should be unique and relevant to your business. If you have multiple pages with the same content or have your content on other sites you risk being penalised by Google in your search ranking. The key words you are targeting should be repeated 4 or 5 times in a page and your pages should be about 300 words long.
